“And these things write we unto you . . .” —I John 1:4

Soldier’s Mark

A soldier’s mark I bear.
A soldier’s right have I;
a soldier’s fare.

A soldier’s fight I fought;
and many things I saw,
and many bought.

Spitted, scarred was I,
my wanton spoil to gain,
my luck to try.

Not ev’ry mark I bear
is borne for fight well fought
ere got me here.

Many a scrape and scar
I got me in a fight
aginst a law.

Still my King discharged me not,
but from my record purged the blot;
and now fight I for Him, or naught.
